The Miniature Australian Shepherd was developed in the United States in the late 1960s by selectively breeding smaller Australian Shepherds. Breeders wanted to retain all the intelligence, agility, and herding instincts of the standard Aussie — just in a more compact, travel-friendly size. Despite the name, the breed doesn’t come from Australia; its ancestors were likely Basque herding dogs brought to the U.S. through Australia, which led to the misleading name.
These mini dynamos are not just adorable — they’re incredibly smart too. In fact, they can learn and respond to over 100 words or commands, and many are even trained as therapy or service dogs thanks to their keen intuition and desire to work.
